hey there, i'm a self proclaimed complextro artist, and i wanna say why.
i like this subgenre as an offbeat of electro since it takes the best of both house and dubstep and mashes it together.
as for actually producing it, you need several more active instruments than a normal house song, which makes mastering a bit more difficult, but usually everything is around the mid-level.
as for the drop, i feel it should be a "surprise". if you take a good complextro song, you can't really tell it's complextro until the drop. the point is to have a good house song, then you add complexity to the drop.
it's hard for me personally to get rid of distortion in my mixes, but i hope i get better! i can make the songs sound "full" without dirtying up the overall mix so i gotta stay positive...
